Documents you need for a home loan application (checklist)

Johannesburg South Africa
Having the right documents ready is one of the easiest ways to speed up your home loan application. Here’s everything most South African banks will ask for.
Everyone needs
- A clear copy of your South African ID (or passport, for non-residents)
- Proof of income — your latest payslips
- Three months’ bank statements
- Proof of residence, no older than three months (e.g. a utility bill)
If you’re salaried
- Your three most recent payslips
- A letter of employment, if requested
If you’re self-employed or earn commission
- Six months’ bank statements
- Your latest financial statements or management accounts
- Personal and business tax returns, where applicable
- A letter from your accountant confirming income, if requested
Once you’ve found a home
- A signed Offer to Purchase
Requirements vary slightly between banks, and we’ll confirm exactly what’s needed for your situation — so nothing holds up your application.
